POWERPHONE for The Quake

How often have you been in to situations where you would like to use your iPhone as the

only source of light ?

The upcoming feature “The Quake needed a light fixture with size and look as the iPhone 6, battery included, but with twice as much light as the iPhone. They wanted to use the phone – in shot – to light up a big dark room.

Softlights designed and built 3 identical phone-dummies with more then 2 times more light than a regular iPhone.

The LED that was used, has the same Kelvin as the iPhone, but used higher quality ULTRA LED with TLCI of 99.

“During the month of December2015, we intensively tested the equipment intended to control the hundreds of meters of LED strips that had just been ordered for the sets. Henrik Moseid had supplied us with a dozen completely flicker-free high frequency dimmers that were attached to rolls of Softlights LED strips in RGBW. Attached to the DMX console, each Softlights LEDimmer allowed us to control the light intensity and colour down to the percent during each take.”

Danish Cinematographer Lars Vestergaard on Softlights Juliette LED Ultra. Now shooting «Lykkeland»

I have been avoiding LED lights – until now The expression of the human face is the most important when I try to visualize stories. LED light have not been doing a good job on the human skin. And specially, the white «nordic» skin tones. With LED, they have tendency to look plastic and artificial. And it has been difficult to mix LED with classic halogen, HMI, fire and candle light. Impressed after a test shoot I was introduced to Softlights LED Ultra by my gaffer Nicholas Messel on a test shoot. I got really impressed. We are now in the middle of the shoot of a Norwegian TV Drama called Lykkeland, and the Juliette has become one of my favorite lighting tools. The Juliette is clearly the best LED I have ever tested, in fact the only LED that have worked for me. They are also the most flexible LED I have been introduced to. Because they are super light weight, I often use them as a top light, easy to rig under the ceiling, even in a tight location. And I love the remote dimming, the possibility to mix kelvin from 2800 to 6500K, not to mention the flexibility with the build in DMX.

A real soft light To create a soft light, I need a large size lighting-surface. A lighting fixture at the size of a Juliette 4×4 could easily become too heavy and take up too much space. The good thing with the Juliette is their extremely thin and lightweight design. They take up a minimum of space on the often too tiny locations. The possibility to control the soft source of light with the snap-grid from DOP choice eliminate a forrest of flagg & C-stand and saves a lot of rigging-time. And most importantly, they work beautiful in collaboration with HMI and Tungsten lights. It is easy to get addicted to Juliette. It is a great pleasure to work with this lamps» Lars Vestergaard DFF

Juliette Bi Color LED gives light to the new feature film “The Bird Catcher”

” I have replaced all tube, tungsten and HMI based soft sources with the new Juliette LED prototype. They are doing a great job simulating everything from candlelight to overcast daylight. This is the first time I have replaced all softer source tungsten with LED on a period film.

The reason is strictly the great skin tones, wide color spectrum and possibility to go from 2700 to 6300 kelvin in seconds” John Christian Rosenlund, Cinematographer

In our package from Storyline Rental in Oslo, we have a set of 3 Juliette 4×4, 2 Juliette 4×2 and several Bi-Color Mono Tubes. The LED lights from Softlights blend perfectly with our HMI and tungsten Fresnel package.

MonoTubes connected with great care in the ceiling by thin wire in the 250 year old house:

The tubes did a great job creating a very soft top light, matching the candle light , with-in the very tight space and low ceiling. The extremely thin and light weight soft box was designed by my excellent Gaffer Nicholas Messel and his crew. The MonoTube light gave use a freedom to shoot all 360 degrees around the table. The backlight at the end of the table was created with a MonoTube inside a Softlights reflector with egg-crate.

About The Bird Catcher:

“After being torn away from her family, 14-year-old Esther must assume a new identity in order to navigate her survival under the hostility of Nazi-occupied Norway”

Directed by Ross Clarke and produced by Motion Picture Capital.

A great response at the Micro Salon 2017

Thank you for you fantastic response to our new LED Ultra products at the Micro Salon in PARIS. This was our first official presentation of the new Softlights LED Ultra, the Juliette and the Mono Tube. It is not to deny that we were nervous for your feedback. It was therefore a great relief to see so many smiles from the professional film and TV industry. Thank you 🙂

Results from the advanced LED comparison test

In August 30th. 2016, NRK/FNF (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation,

Norwegian Cinematographers Guild) tested the 8 most popular Bi-Color LED lamps in TLCI. Softlights LED got the highest TLCI score of all test units. Our LED measured 99 and 98 (out of 100) in Daylight and Tungsten. Our LED achieved, in the same test, the best reference /target curve in relation to real Daylight and real Tungsten light.

If you would like to test our brand new Bi-Color LED, they are now available for sale as Stripes/Ribbons and MONO Tube, both in ULTRA and Classic Quality LED.
